Our typical day
Activities change as the children change, but I tend to get into routines that provide a safe framework for the children, adapting them as necessary. I usually take a trip to one of the area's fenced in parks at least once a week and play outside every day, rain or shine (except maybe a nor'easter). Once a week, usually on Fridays, I have a "theme day" inspired by current holidays, stories, objects, actions, etc.
7:30—8:30 Children arrive and are greeted. Parents give a general report on mood, sleep, toileting, and any other important information. The children have free play and get comfortable before their family leaves. The children choose: ride-on toys, stories, singing, sorting, or any number of toys, regularly rotated and generally made of natural materials. Earlier drop-off is available for an additional fee and I can also provide a nutritious age appropriate breakfast.
8:30—9:00 Circle time: we gather together at the circle carpet and talk about our plans for day.
9:00—10:00 Indoor play: the children choose their activities: yoga, blocks, house play, dolls, musical toys, books, etc. We always listen to music while playing. This is also time for the frequent art projects, often part of our weekly "theme day".
10:00—10:30 Hand washing and snack time
10:30--11:30 Outdoor play: we spend time looking at the plants and the bugs, working in the yard, or digging in the large sandbox. The children interact with the plants, watch the birds, play & explore with water, paint, read, hunt for strawberries in the patch, taste herbs in the garden or just lay in the grass and feel the sun on their skin.
11:30—12:00 Lunch: We often eat outside, if the weather permits. Lunch is very often vegetarian with lots of beans, pasta, rice, or tortillas. We have at least two veggies or fruits from our local farmers (or from my garden) with lunch.
12:00—2:00 Naptime and/or quiet time. I have portable cribs with washable inserts for babies and sleep mats for older kids.
2:00 -- 4:00 Indoor and outdoor play. The children choose where they want to be and what they do.
At pick up time, I give a verbal report of our day, the ups and downs, health & eating reports, moments of triumph, or challenges. I also tuck in a brief daily report card into their bags. Children need to leave by 4:00. Later pick up available for additional charge. If not pre-arranged, late fees apply.
